Cable Collective Event

On the morning of July 30th, members from three collectives -"Stream", "Cable" and "Within Earshot" met at the RMIT Spiritual Centre for six hours of learning dedicated solely to the . The morning was spent discussing technical specifications under the careful guidance of Byron Scullin.
Equipment set-up was taught and run-through as participants actively set-up the space with twelve speakers, two subs and a digital mixing desk. References were made to past performance designs and methods of artist's such as , with particular care taken to explain the "How", "Why" and "What If", behind such a system design.
Guest artist was Bendigo based, Jacques Soddell whose current projects include running the experimental music/multimedia label, "Cajid Media". Jaques performs regularly showcasing both audio and visual works in stereo and surround audio formation.
The time with Jacques began with a historical overview of surround composition, punctuated by 5.1 composition listening examples. Artists presented to the participants ranged from the mathematically composed sounds of greek architect and composer, to the rock of German band, "Can".
Following on from this overview, Jacques presented his own work examples, discussing his creative work process and providing a revealing insight into his personal methods. Points of interest included his choice of software, methods of gathering and processing sounds as well as software options which are available specifically for surround composition,
Grand finale of the day involved students presenting their own pieces to the group, mixing them live, via the Acousmatic set-up we had in place.
