- a series of Stairwell recordings, commencing in early 2007 and resolving in July 2009. Methods involve utilising multitrack recording techniques developed by yours truly specifically for the capture of sounds within the unique sonic architecture of a stairwell. All recordings are completed in a surround composition, translating what is a vertical sonic plane (lowest to highest levels), into a horizontal soundscape experience. The selected space is six levels in height with an interior consisting of concrete, metal and walls the consistency of rock. This combination of the complex angular structure typical of a stairwell, the division of the space created by each level and the hard, wave-repelling surfaces provide a sonic environment capable of producing acoustic phenomena via the collision between architecture and sound wave alone. Three recordings have been completed to date - with the last piece proving to be the most demanding, rewarding and frustrating out of them all. All three recordings have their own identities heavily dependant on the time they were produced and on the resolutions uncovered in their final outcome. Each presented themselves as an answer to questions and curiosities i felt compelled to explore/dissect within the context of my work development. Variables between the pieces included choice of sounds placed within the space and the means by which were used to do so, compositional technique, Microphone placement and a selected key-factor whose role/responses were the prime focus behind the creative intent.
